Ganja Bonsai

Concept

Ganja Bonsai

While a growing number of countries are legalizing cannabis, it is still often spoken about through the lens of being a "drug." At Ganja Bonsai, we create cannabis bonsai that draw on bonsai, a traditional Japanese art, together with the spirit of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and in the changes brought by time. By looking at cannabis not as something to consume but as a plant and a work of art, we hope to offer a new way to consider its value and its possibilities.

Driftwood

Driftwood

The driftwood used in our cannabis bonsai is gathered from across Thailand, then cleaned and reworked by hand, piece by piece. We focus in particular on the roots of the tree. Beneath the trunk and branches visible above ground lies an even larger world, and roots formed over long stretches of time in that environment carry a distinctive strength. We preserve the one-of-a-kind forms created by nature while giving them new life as works with renewed value.

Ceramics

Ceramics

The ceramics used in our cannabis bonsai are handcrafted vessels by Japanese potters, rediscovered in Thailand's secondhand markets for Japanese goods. Japan is home to many traditional pottery cultures such as Shigaraki and Bizen ware, each carrying a long history and inherited craftsmanship. Yet among them are many pieces whose true value remains buried and little known. Through cannabis bonsai, we hope to share Japan's refined techniques and sense of beauty with the world, and to have them rediscovered as something of new value.

Exhibition

Collaborations & Permanent Exhibitions

Ganja Bonsai is currently based in Bangkok, with a permanent exhibition at the store of the world-renowned cannabis brand Green House Seed Co Nuanchan. We also collaborate with cannabis dispensaries and farms across Thailand to create cannabis bonsai that reflect each one's character and story. Rather than simply displaying our work, we aim to create spaces that express cannabis culture and connection with the local community. We are now preparing to open a Ganja Bonsai gallery in Bangkok within the year, so that more people can experience cannabis bonsai firsthand.
