But the biggest one was something I couldn’t get to sit right in my own head.

Cannabis bonsai started as a way to push back against the “cannabis = bad” image, to be part of building something that could become a real cannabis culture. I made a bunch of pieces. But if someone asked me “is this finished? is this the thing?” I couldn’t say yes. I use driftwood I find thrown out in nature, and Japanese ceramics I dig up in Thailand’s second-hand markets. People always say it’s a unique combination, and yeah, objectively it probably is. But it never fully clicked for me.

I think the reason goes back to something a mentor said, someone I’ve known since New York who’s been in the art world a long time. He saw the bonsai when it was just starting to get noticed, and said: “Kei, what you’re making isn’t art.” That stuck. My projects feel connected to me, they feel like they’re pointing in the same direction, but I could never quite put into words what my art actually was. That vagueness sat in the back of everything.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Looking for Driftwood in Pattaya’s Heat

Hunting for Ceramics at the Japanese Second-Hand Market

Cannabis Bonsai Was Always About Redefining Value

Looking for Driftwood in Pattaya’s Heat

I had a reason to be in Pattaya at the end of April, so I used the trip to look for driftwood and ceramics. Both are easier to find there than Bangkok. Driftwood especially, and ceramics are way cheaper.

The driftwood isn’t in the city. You have to go out toward the hills near Elephant Village, and pieces are just lying around out there. You need to watch out for stray dogs (rabies is genuinely common in Thailand), and the heat in late April in Pattaya is the kind that makes you wonder if you’re going to make it back. But when you keep going and find something really beautiful, the feeling is hard to describe. That moment is why I keep doing it.

This day I walked for nearly two hours and found a piece where the root section was fully exposed. That moment always feels like a small rescue. Then the real work starts. I’d brought a small hand saw, spent about 15 minutes on it, completely soaked through.

People sometimes look at a finished bonsai and ask which part of the tree the driftwood came from. I’d always just been choosing by feel. But on this trip I understood something: root sections have a natural asymmetry from the way branches split repeatedly over years, and if I want to make cannabis bonsai that actually hits, that has weight and presence, this is the part I need.

Nobody looks twice at a dug-up root. It’s debris, it gets thrown out. But clean it up, do something with it, give it a frame, and it becomes something people actually want to own. That’s inside what I’ve come to think of as my mission: “taking things that have lost their value, giving them a new angle, and offering them back as value.” I’ve watched that transformation happen in front of me enough times that I don’t question it anymore. Garbage goes in, something someone wants comes out. The difference is craft and context.

So that part clicked into place. What I’ve been doing isn’t making new things. It’s pulling value that already exists back into a state where it’s visible.

Hunting for Ceramics at the Japanese Second-Hand Market

After finding the driftwood I went straight to the Japanese second-hand market to look for ceramics to use as vessels. A lot of Japanese stuff comes into Thailand. Japanese second-hand goods have a reputation internationally for how carefully they’ve been used, and the market for them here is huge.

Pattaya is better value than Bangkok for ceramics. The shop I know there, Kanpai Reuse Pattaya, run by an acquaintance, has a system where prices drop gradually the longer things sit unsold. The ceramics with resale value come in wooden boxes or grouped together, easy to spot. Everything else is packed randomly into cardboard boxes lined up in rows. You have to tip each one out completely to see what’s inside. And honestly, 90% of what’s in there isn’t what I’m looking for.

Sweating through box after box, this thought kept coming up: how many of these ceramics are going to get buried, never find anyone to see their value, and end up in the trash? Something that was made by hand, that someone used, becomes something to get rid of the moment it loses its context. I kept feeling that boundary and not being able to make sense of it.

Like this one. Coarse clay with iron content, black glaze, and the whole character of the firing just showing up as texture on the surface. The way the wheel marks move, the way the black glaze pools and bubbles toward the rim, making something almost like a landscape in the surface. It’s a strong version of “the beauty of letting the earth be visible.” There’s a maker’s stamp on the bottom. One-of-a-kind, probably made by an individual artist. You feel the wabi-sabi before you can describe it.

And this thing, if nobody buys it here, actually ends up as garbage. This market is basically the last place an artist’s work gets a chance at a transaction. There are ceramics like this buried all over Thailand’s Japanese second-hand markets. Getting to them is rough and slow, but finding something real in that pile gives you a feeling that’s a lot like finding beautiful driftwood.

I didn’t have it fully figured out yet. But somewhere during that search I felt like, if I connected the driftwood and ceramics the way I was now understanding them, I could place cannabis bonsai at the beginning of whatever it is I actually want to say as an artist.

Cannabis Bonsai Was Always About Redefining Value

“Your cannabis bonsai isn’t art.” I get it now. Back then I was still making the shape, but hadn’t gotten to the meaning. What makes something art isn’t the object. It’s what context it’s inside. I knew that technically, but I was fuzzy about it in practice. What I understand now is that changing the context to reconstruct value itself, and getting that to hold as culture, that’s what I want to say through cannabis bonsai, and through Organic Gangsta as a whole.

Cannabis is probably the best example of this I have. It gets talked about as a drug. But it’s also a plant that’s been used as a low-impact resource and something for mental care. The way its value keeps getting evaluated differently, that’s not a bug. That’s proof that value isn’t fixed. It moves with context.

Right now, we’re where we are. I can’t change that. But the moment when cannabis gets evaluated correctly, when its value gets redefined, that’s definitely coming.

Making that future is on us, the people who love cannabis and are alive right now. We have to build a culture that actually moves the people who come after us. Cannabis has pulled me back from the edge more than once. That’s exactly why I want to build something that connects forward.

Cannabis bonsai is the door in. And what I want to build while I’m alive is a structure where that connects out to everything else Organic Gangsta is doing.

The cannabis bonsai gallery is part of that structure, and it keeps hitting problems, keeps getting pushed back. Probably summer at this point, is my feeling. But sitting around waiting for it to open feels like a waste. I want to be moving. So after Golden Week I’m going to bring a proposal to Green House.

This whole thing cleared up whatever had been stuck in my head about cannabis bonsai.
